Water broke and the contractions were getting started. We were rushing to the Labor & Delivery room.
I was thinking, in many parts of world, for some reason, men were not allowed inside the delivery room and the delivery remained as a mystery.
Letting husband to be the part of this important stage of life was an noble idea.
Had seen enough about the delivery rooms in the hollywood movies and sitcoms. Personally I had even heard stories of dads passing out in the delivery room during the birth.
I had made up my mind that I will stick by my lady's side and be there throughout.
As the contractions picked up, I tried to encourage her to push it more. It was a test of strength, endurance and persistance. I know she was in great pain but there was not much I was able to do, other than being there.
The tremendous pushing and pain continued and the clock ticked.
The day became evening and then the moment arrived...
Our baby had descended, little smeared in fluids.
And there it was the first cry.
It was such an euphoric feeling to hear the voice of the baby. Sound of crying never sounded so good before!
The doctor asked if I want to cut the umblical cord and I readily obliged. For some reasons, the cutting of cord made me feel the part of entire experience.
There was a new found respect for my wife and all the women in general. It sinked into my mind that there is no greater pain than this and there is no greater strength than the strength shown by women during the child birth.
I stood there looking at my beautiful lady and even more beautiful baby....

ReplyDeleteThough I was a doctor,I was not allowed inside the labor room in a famous hospital in Bangalore during my sons delivery about 28 years ago. This pains me a lot even to this day.During 91-93 I was a M.O. at chakranagar of Shimogga dist. during which time I had to conduct more than hundred deliveries myself.I used to insist on the presence of husbands during delivery just to get a feel of what pain and agony their women undergo.Nice article. Thanks for sharing.
